The first Waldorf School in Guatemala

Caracol School, San Marcos La Laguna, Solola,
Guatemala PROJECT: CONSTRUCTION, CLASSROOMS
BUDGET $50,000
The Caracol School is the first internationally certified Waldorf school in Guatemala,
founded in 2007 in the town of San Marcos, La Laguna. Since its inception, it has
provided a holistic education to the local community. All Mayan students
(approximately 80% of the student population) receive a partial scholarship to attend
this enriching education.
We are a group of educators from the communities of Lake Atitlán, committed to
guiding children through an education based on love and respect. The school follows
the principles of Waldorf education, which places the student at the center of
education and helps them grow according to their natural development. This
education is contextualized with the Mayan Worldview to create a conscious
environment where the head, heart and hands are integrated to foster true learning.
Caracol School seeks to cover approximately 60% of its basic expenses through
donations each month because it is not self-sustaining. This is because the school
provides partial scholarships to 80% of its students who are part of the school’s
Mayan population.
BACKGROUND
Although interest in education is increasing, public schools lack the infrastructure to
meet the real educational needs due to overcrowding in classrooms. Escuela Caracol
receives more indigenous children every year seeking to receive a quality education.
This has led us to have a larger student population, but we do not have more
classrooms to accommodate more students in our school.
PROJECT COST
We need to build a new classroom to cover the basic needs of more students at a
cost of $50,000. This project will benefit the municipality of San Marcos la Laguna
and its surrounding areas.
BENEFICIARIES: 690 boys and girls (55% girls)
