David LaMotte School: Making a Difference in Santiago Atitlán

The  David LaMotte School serves the Mayan village of Tzanchaj, near Santiago, Atitlán. It was originally founded by a local Mayan man to serve children who would otherwise not be able to obtain an education. In an effort to preserve the local Mayan culture in Tzanchaj, classes are taught in both Spanish and the local language, Tz’utujil.

This global grant was a partnership between Rotary Club of Asheville, NC in District 7670, the Rotary E-Club of Lake Atitlán in Panajachel, Guatemala, and PEG Partners Inc., a non-profit based in Black Mountain, NC and founded by Rotary Peace Fellow David LaMotte. The project will provide a three-classroom school serving around 60 children, age 3 through 1st grade, four teachers, and a director.

The David LaMotte School gives the children a bright future and will make a positive impact on the entire community of Tzanchaj.
